Download this week’s Vocab/Grammar Review Sheet:

Week 5 (Units 6-8)

Most Important Things We Went Over This Week

  • ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요 vs. ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 = can/can’t vs. know how/don’t know how
  • -(으)세요 = -(으)십시요 in formal polite style
  • 아/어야 되다 and 아/어야 하다 are the same in meaning, but 하다 = written more often and 되다 = spoken more often
  • 아/어도 되다 and 아/어도 괜찮다 and 아/어도 좋다 all have the same meaning
  • ~지 않아도 되다 = don’t have to vs. ~면 안 되다 = can’t
  • ~고 싶다 = first/second person, but ~고 싶어 하다 = third person (can be used with 을/를 and 이/가)
  • ~면 좋겠다 = a simple wish vs. ~았/었으면 좋겠다 = supposes the realization of an as yet unrealized state (so it is a stronger emphasis of the wish)

Things that Need More Conversation Practice

  • (으)십시요 and the negative form in formal polite style
  • 아/어야 되다 and 아/어도 되다 and ~면 안 되다 and ~지 않아도 되다
  • ~고 싶어 하다 = third person
  • ~면 좋겠다 and ~았/었으면 좋겠다

Things that Need Quizzed

  • Generally, how do you make something into formal polite style?
  • What are two more ways to write 아/어도 되다?
  • Difference between ~지 않아도 되다 vs. ~면 안 되다?
  • What’s the third person of ~고 싶다?
  • Which one more strongly emphasizes the wish ~면 좋겠다 vs. ~았/었으면 좋겠다?
